Petroleum Engineering

The four years degree course in Petroleum Engineering offered by the institute is permanently affiliated to Pune University and is accredited by AICTE. Over seven hundred graduate and postgraduate students have been graduated from this department since 1987 and are working at different positions in Petroleum Industry in India and abroad with great distinction.
BE (Petroleum Engineering)
BE (Petroleum) is a four-year course of eight terms permanently affiliated to the University of Pune and is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New, Delhi. The program covers courses related to components in Petroleum Industry including petroleum exploration, reservoir engineering, production engineering, well engineering, drilling engineering, environment engineering and refining technology. Elective subjects like unconventional hydrocarbon resources, well control, production enhancement and optimization, carbon management, petroleum economics and transport of oil and gas are introduced in the curriculum of final year of petroleum engineering.

The students are encouraged to participate in different co curricular activities organized at national and international level. They are also exposed to internship/ summer training at the end of sixth term for duration of six weeks. An industrial exposure gives them understanding of working environment and challenges in Petroleum Industry.

M.E. (Petroleum Engineering) by Papers

The department also offers a post-graduate course of Master of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering (ME) affiliated to University of Pune since 1998. This Program is aimed at developing expertise in petroleum engineering with an aptitude towards research and development work. Professionals in the industry find it useful to improve upon their academic qualifications for better prospects. It also helps graduates of other disciplines to convert themselves as petroleum engineers. The course work and dissertation work is highly demanding. Therefore candidates are advised to get acquainted with the curriculum and nature of study expected before opting for this course.

  • There is no age limit for admission.
  • Graduates of Petroleum / Petrochemical / Chemical / Mechanical / Production / Polymer Engineering are eligible for admission.
  • Students who have qualified GATE Examination are given preference.
  • Eighteen seats are sanctioned for this course; out of which 3 seats are reserved for SC/ST category and 5 seats are reserved for students sponsored by various Institutes / Industrial Organizations.

The first and second semester of M.E. (Petroleum) comprises advanced courses in Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering, Production Engineering, Mathematical and Statistical Methods applicable to Petroleum Engineering, Transport Phenomena in Petroleum Engineering, Natural Gas Engineering, Environment Management and Safety Measures, Computer Applications and two elective subjects related to Petroleum Engineering. The third and fourth semester of M.E. (Petroleum) is devoted to seminars and dissertation. The students are required to deliver total three seminars (one seminar every semester for every student) starting from the second semester. Every student has to undergo training in the petroleum industry.

M.E. (Petroleum Engineering) by Research

The department also offers M.E. (Petroleum) degree by research for the candidates who are working in oil and gas industry for more than five years after graduation. The student admitted to M.E. (by research) will be required to appear and pass any four papers from amongst the papers for the regular M.E. course. These four papers will be decided by the guide of the candidate and shall be approved by the concerned Board of Studies and B.U.T.R of the University of Pune.

Ph.D in Petroleum Engineering

The department also offers Ph.D in Petroleum Engineering, affiliated to University of Pune. Procedure for this is strictly as per the rules and regulations decided by the University of Pune.

Ph.D in Geology

The department also offers Ph.D in Geology, affiliated to University of Pune. Procedure for this is strictly as per the rules and regulations decided by the University of Pune.

Petroleum engineering education
Petroleum engineering students cover a broad education spectrum from exploration of hydrocarbons to refining and transportation of oil and gas. This requires understanding of knowledge of pure and applied sciences along with different engineering disciplines. Petroleum engineers search for oil and gas reservoirs beneath the earth's surface. They develop the safest and most efficient methods of bringing those resources to the surface. The petroleum engineer is involved from discovering the hydrocarbons through refining and distributing it. Using skills that are often associated with the earth sciences, petroleum engineers examine a variety of geologic and engineering data to determine the most likely sources of hydrocarbons. They often need to travel extensively as the places are far located. 

Since Petroleum engineering is truly an interdisciplinary program where inputs from different disciplines are required. Therefore the emphasis is to provide balanced education in essential (geology, chemical engineering, reservoir, drilling, production, refining and environment) areas of petroleum engineering.

Petroleum Engineering deals with understanding of subsurface which is not directly seen. Risk and uncertainty has to be addressed while developing any methodology. Hence realization of problem, analysis of problem and capability to find plausible solution leads to considerate knowledge of different disciplines.

A petroleum engineer is a core member of any team consisting of geologists, geophysicists, chemical engineers, mechanical engineers and environmental engineers as he is aware of developments in each field relevant to petroleum industry. He is a link between different disciplines.

Petroleum Engineering is a dynamic discipline, with new challenges occurring all of the time. Understanding of this is realized when the students are undergoing internship.

It is often seen in petroleum industry that career path can change from one area to another therefore students need to be prepared when change occurs. Future graduates must be prepared to adapt, be diverse, and aware.

It is the program's objective to provide students with the knowledge required to meet these challenges by participating in social and professional activities, by attending seminars and lectures, by obtaining internships or at the least, interacting with industry. This allows students realize the evolving challenges in petroleum industry.

The oil and gas industry is one of the most volatile industry controlling economies of many countries. The production of oil has almost reached to a level of 85 MMBOPD and demand is almost matching the production thus reducing the gap of spare capacity. More than 50 % production is coming from matured fields discovered more than thirty years before. Many new discoveries are challenging and lie in high-risk areas.

Hydrocarbon Industry in India is more than hundred years old and is served efficiently by the public sector companies. Private companies have entered in this industry in India in last twenty years.
National Exploration Licensing Program operated by DGH have controlled the exploration development and production of hydrocarbons in India. Many companies, national and multinationals, have established their research centers, and offices in India due to availability of large number of competent engineering graduates.

IN the present globalization scenario, many multinational companies have expressed their desire to extend cooperation in different aspects allowing their commercial software for use to student community at very low or free cost and also by giving scholarship to deserving students.

The Institute also has student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, (SPE International), one of the largest professional body with more than 1, 00,000 members all over the globe. The chapter organizes many student centric programs throughout the year. ONGC established a Chair of Professor to promote research and development in the department. Objective of this chair is also to promote better industry institute relationship for the benefit of students.

Career Opportunities in Petroleum Engineering

A career in Petroleum Industry requires effective use of brain and hand. They should have desire to work in field and also need to understand professional software to explain risk and uncertainty. This field is lucrative for any intelligent, hardworking student .

Petroleum engineers are recruited in national and private oil and gas companies, contractor and service companies, engineering consulting firms, government agencies, oil field services, and equipment suppliers. Petroleum engineers also work as consultant. With growing use of specialized software in Petroleum Industry, the engineers have opportunity to work in software industry as well.

Most petroleum engineers work in field, onshore or offshore, but some also work in office. There are excellent global opportunities for petroleum engineers, as it is very much a global business. All are global citizens in this industry. Many companies have offices and sites in multiple countries and transfers are common.

Almost all jobs in this field require excellent team spirit. They need to have ability to communicate effectively and work efficiently with other people. Engineers should be creative, inquisitive, analytical, and detail-oriented. They should be able to work as part of a team and to communicate well, both orally and in writing.

Employment opportunities are available in national and international exploration and production (E&P) companies, gas industries, supporting services companies, consultancy firms, Government, research organizations etc.

Computer companies often prefer petroleum engineers because of their educational background of exposure to many science and engineering subjects, ability to carry out economic analysis, capability to visualize effectively and team spirit. Petroleum Engineers find employment in simulation, automation industry as well.
